Having more good things is good, actually
Where I am Mr. Brightside for Chinese overinvestment in clean tech
Danger is real. Chaos and entropy reign. The world needs sober-eyed analysts, green eyeshaded accountants (luckily improved internal lighting including very energy efficient LEDs have obviated the need for such eyeshades, allowing this expression to fade into history), insurance adjustors, and security professionals to think deeply about the risks and uncertainties that we face. But sometimes we need to step back from thinking about the third order implications on the probability of this inflection point and pay attention to the main story.
In the clean energy space, the main story is that solar has become incredibly cheap and plentiful (and, increasingly, batteries too).
This is largely because of Chinese investment in production capacity, and yes, one might be concerned about dependence on a geopolitical rival/strategic competitor/frenemy/adversary or about the fairness of particular subsidies and what will determine the durability of a coalition for decarbonization in the developed world and where good jobs can be found in that new paradigm. I’m happy to engage in those debates and am, but the wonderful Heatmap.news let me publish my simple reflection that having more good things is good.
Let me know what I missed.
